Is this thing on?

Can you hear me now?

Yes, it appears the blog is indeed still working, despite a total lack of updates in the last few months. It’s mostly due to exhaustion at the end of the day. And the fact that’s it’s MUCH harder to get non-blurry shots of Alexandra these days.

In lieu of trying to be witty and creative, I’m going to just try to post more pictures here and there. And continue to give you the medical updates (which just reinforce the fact that she’s awesome). From her 18-month check-up on Tuesday:

  • Height: 2′ 9.5″ = 93rd percentile (though I would have thought it was more than an inch of growth in three months, given that she’s now wearing 2T clothes)
  • Weight: 29 lb, 3.5 oz = 98th percentile
  • Head Circumference: 49.8 cm = 99th+ percentile (new system, so at least they don’t list “100th” percentile anymore)

In other family  news, Ian is back at LeapFrog doing another maternity leave fill and I’m doing some consulting. (And due to the NDA they made me sign, that’s pretty much all I can say about it.)

We hope all is well with you and that 2014 is off to a great start!

A is for Above Average

Greetings, friends! Time certainly flies when you’re chasing after a toddler. Specifically, chasing after our toddler who is now running and she’s FAST. Life here continues to be busy and good. There’s a (small) chance that I may consult part-time, so we’ve been looking into daycare options. Regardless of employment, we’re thinking she may go a a few days a week to hang out with other kids; we’ll keep you posted.

In other news, she had her 15-month doctor’s appointment last week and she continues to be off the charts:

  • Height: 2′ 8.5″ = 96th percentile (and officially more than half my height!)
  • Weight: 26 lb, 12 oz = 96th percentile
  • Head Circumference: 48.5 cm = “100th” percentile

She’s a full-out toddler now, including liberal use of the word “no.” She completely understands the concepts of yes and no (typical said as “da” and “doh”), at least as it relates to her wants. She’s also hard to pin down for a photo…they need a “toddler speed” function on the iPhone. 🙂 I’ll try to post more pictures soon (vs. the long gaps we’ve had recently in posts). For now, enjoy some older pics, as these were already synced with my computer.

Happy Birthday Alexandra!

I think all of us have now recovered from Alexandra’s birthday weekend. We had a great time celebrating with friends and family from near and far on Saturday the 20th. Alex especially liked the cake part of the event. On her actual birthday, we just had a family dinner at Jack’s Prime (where the ice cream was less of a hit). She also had her one-year doctor’s appointment on her birthday and she’s doing great. The stats:

  • Length: 2′ 6.5″ and 90th percentile
  • Weight: 25 lb, 3.5 oz and 98th percentile … and, again, before anyone out there worries, she’s fine and the doctor isn’t worried about her weight.
  • Head Circumference: 48 cm and still literally off the charts (since 100th percentile doesn’t really exist)

Finally, a heads-up that we switched the email notification providers, so you may have missed the email about this post. Many cute pictures…check it out. 🙂

More Milestones (and the latest bear pic)

Though I find it difficult to believe, Alexandra is now nine months old (and has been for several days now). She’s officially been outside longer than she was inside! Time does fly when you’re sleep deprived having fun.

Most importantly, she continues to be in good health overall (though, ironically, I think she caught a cold at the doctor’s office). The stats from her nine-month appointment:

  • Length: 2’4″ and 63rd percentile … I actually think she’s taller than this, but it’s hard to get babies to straighten out to get accurate measurements.
  • Weight: 22 lb, 12.5 oz and 96th percentile … and before anyone out there worries, she’s fine and the doctor isn’t worried about her weight. In fact, Dr. Jeanne’s comment was that most of the weight is probably in her head, since …
  • Head Circumference: 47.5 cm and literally off the charts (since 100th percentile doesn’t really exist) … I repeat my assertion that she is very smart, though the compliments she receives daily may also be inflating her head. (Seriously, whenever we go out, someone comments on how beautiful she is. Usually with the intro line of “those eyes!”)
"I'm nine months old now!" Editor's note: And getting so tall!

In other Alex news, we’re also cleared to start finger foods, which is off to a slow start. However, Bo seems to be enjoying this latest turn of events.

And, in family news, we get to fix the plumbing in the master bath AND replace part of the main line! Yay for home ownership! (To be clear, by “we,” I mean “the people we’re hiring to take care of it.” Just in case you hallucinated for a second and thought we’d try to do it ourselves or something equally crazy.)

Growth & Grandparents

Today’s news: Alexandra had her six-month check-up. Which included two shots, plus an oral vaccine…lucky Alex! She actually was a trooper and I’m pleased to report that Ian, the nurse and I all still have intact eardrums. In addition, we have our latest update on her stats:

  • Length: 2′ 3″ … 89th percentile — we’re measuring in feet and inches, not just inches!
  • Weight: 17 lb, 7 oz … 72nd percentile — weight is finally getting in-line with her height (and before anyone worries, the doctor is pleased with her weight gain, so we’re all good)
  • Head Circumference: 45 cm … she’s literally off-the-chart, as “100th percentile” isn’t really possible — what can we say? We all knew she was off-the-charts for cuteness, and maybe it went to her head. (HAH! I so funny.)

(If you’d like to compare to her prior measurements, check out this post.)

Also on Alexandra’s social schedule this week was brunch with Grams and Grandpa, where she discovered the joys of empty plastic containers. Thanks to Grams for the video!

That's a whole lot of happiness contained in one booth.

She looks a bit stoned in the still shot of the video, but she’s not drugged. She’s just drunk with happiness. It’s a just over a minute, which is a solid time-to-cuteness ratio:

Just the stats, ma’am

The numbers from Alexandra’s 4-month checkup today:

  • Length: 25.5″ … 88th percentile — big jump here! She’s over two feet tall!
  • Weight: 14 lb, 7.5 oz … 55th percentile — woo hoo! Doubled birth weight and now in normal range!
  • Head Circumference: 42.4 cm … 90th percentile — still has a big head (physically, not metaphorically … at least not yet)

And a picture from today, as we were waiting for Dr. Jeanne:

If you’re curious, here are the stats from prior visits …

Finally, for those who are interested, we also wanted to clarify California disability laws: It’s six weeks of paid disability (SSI) for giving birth or eight weeks for a c-section. After that, there are six paid weeks of Baby Bonding time (again through SSI) and then another six weeks unpaid. So, for us, that’s a total of twenty weeks.
